Crispy Fried Green Tomatoes.
Ingredients:
- 1large green tomato.
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Oil, for frying (vegetable or canola oil works well)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Tomato:
- Wash the green tomato thoroughly under cold water.
- Slice the tomato into thin, even slices, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Pat the slices dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps the coating adhere better.
- Prepare the Breading Stations:
- In a shallow bowl, beat the egg and mix it with the buttermilk until well combined.
- In a separate shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Bread the Tomato Slices:
- Dip each tomato slice into the egg/buttermilk mixture, ensuring it is fully coated.
- Transfer the coated slice to the flour/cornmeal mixture.
- Dredge the slice until it is fully covered with the breading mixture.
- Press lightly to help the coating adhere.
- Shake off any excess coating.
- Rest the Coated Slices:
- Place the breaded slices on a plate or a rack and let them rest for about 15 minutes.
- This helps the coating set and stick better during frying.
- Fry the Tomato Slices:
- Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- You can test if the oil is hot enough by dropping a small piece of breading into the oil; it should sizzle and float to the top.
- Carefully place a few tomato slices into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until each side is golden brown and crispy.
- Use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the fried tomatoes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve:
- Serve the fried green tomatoes hot as an appetizer, side dish, or snack.
- They are delicious on their own or with a dipping sauce of your choice.
Enjoy your crispy fried green tomatoes!
