Crispy Fried Green Tomatoes

With a big green tomato, egg, a little bit of butter milk, flour, cornmeal, salt, and pepper; you can have these tasty fried green tomatoes in no time!

Ingredients:

  • 1large green tomato.

  • 1 egg

  • 1/4 cup buttermilk

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal

  • Salt, to taste

  • Black pepper, to taste

  • Oil, for frying (vegetable or canola oil works well)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tomato:

  • Wash the green tomato thoroughly under cold water.

  • Slice the tomato into thin, even slices, about 1/4 inch thick.

  • Pat the slices dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps the coating adhere better.

  1. Prepare the Breading Stations:
  • In a shallow bowl, beat the egg and mix it with the buttermilk until well combined.
  • In a separate shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  1. Bread the Tomato Slices:
  • Dip each tomato slice into the egg/buttermilk mixture, ensuring it is fully coated.

  • Transfer the coated slice to the flour/cornmeal mixture.
  • Dredge the slice until it is fully covered with the breading mixture.
  • Press lightly to help the coating adhere.
  • Shake off any excess coating.
  1. Rest the Coated Slices:
  • Place the breaded slices on a plate or a rack and let them rest for about 15 minutes.
  • This helps the coating set and stick better during frying.
  1. Fry the Tomato Slices:
  • Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • You can test if the oil is hot enough by dropping a small piece of breading into the oil; it should sizzle and float to the top.

  • Carefully place a few tomato slices into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  • Fry for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until each side is golden brown and crispy.

  • Use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the fried tomatoes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  1. Serve:
  • Serve the fried green tomatoes hot as an appetizer, side dish, or snack.
  • They are delicious on their own or with a dipping sauce of your choice.
